Since we’re still in production, I thought we could start out with some coffee news and recipes.

For those of us in the Midwest and East Coast, it’s been hot. Seriously hot. This recipe will save your energy and keep you caffeinated  on these sweltering days.

Cold Brew Coffee Starter

- 1 part coarsely ground coffee.  Freshly ground is best.
- 4 parts room temperature water.

Pulse coffee in grinder for a few seconds. You really don’t want it as fine as you would use in your drip coffee maker. You can use pre-ground coffee, but it’s going to be better if you use fresh.

Pour in the room temp water slowly and stir. Don’t leave any clumps of coffee, as you want the water to extract all of the yummy goodness that’s in the grounds.

Now the easy part (or hard part if you’re as impatient about your coffee as I am). Let it sit. Leave it alone. Let it sit on the counter for at least 4 hours. People who actually think ahead could start this process before bed and not be tortured waiting for it and have it ready when they wake up. Probably want to cover it, but you don’t have to. We have cats and it’s hot here and they really like to shed.

After the interminable wait is over, strain it into another container using a mesh strainer with a coffee filter or paper/linen towel. Then strain it again to make sure you’ve eliminated all of the little grainy bits.

This is some STRONG stuff. If you’re a straight espresso drinker, go for it. If you aren’t mix one part starter, one part water. This is wonderful iced, especially when there’s a heat index of 95F at 9 am and you’ve just GOT to get your fix!

Hi all! San Diego Comic-Con starts in less than 3 weeks, and Strange Matter Comics will be there! Come check us out in the Small Press Area, table K04. We’ll be somewhere between the Web Comics folks like Penny Arcade, PVP, etc. and the concession stands against the far wall.
